Why has black got everyone bewitched, it is not even a color!

As I laggardly scrolled my photo gallery on the phone, something bizarre caught my eye. All my outfits in most of the photographs were black. I ambled over to my cupboard, to disapprove of this outlandish theory that had just posited itself in my head. The cupboard presented an array of all sorts of black!

You see I have generously splashed my children’s rooms with pink. Their dresses are all vibrant colors imaginable. There is a pop of happy, bright hues sprucing every nook and corner of my house. So, the discovery was a wee bit unsettling. This curation of all black home wear, activewear, and party wear had been unintended and gone unnoticeable for a long time. I mulled long enough to deduce why have I like many have gravitated towards this color.

The Power of Black

There is something about black that is so alluring. It radiates power. It is a statement in itself. Black represents finality. It is mystic- sometimes to be feared of, sometimes a symbol of grief.

The Perfect Canvas

Black is a background standing stalwartly, enabling whatever is painted, written, or highlighted on it, to be prominently visible. A canvas that lets any color or design upstage it and yet it holds its fort.

Why is the night sky so mesmerizing? Because black provides an impeccable palette for the stars to glisten and gleam. How the moon loses its dazzle during the day, only to enrapture us on a pitch-black sky.

A Wardrobe Staple

There is a reason why the black LBD is and has been a fashion staple for eons now. It is a statement piece. A no-fail garment that would do wonders for anybody on any occasion.

Regrettably, it’s now associated with a choice of color that is a fat minimizer. The color, irrefutably does succeed in hiding a few of our physical flaws but the diffidence in carrying a piece of clothing because of weight issues will still be perceptible. No color choice would be able to camouflage that. It is not a color to hide behind, but a one to stride with dominance.

A Clean Slate

India’s most revered President APJ Kalam once remarked, “Black color is sentimentally bad but, every blackboard makes the students life bright”.

A blackboard or a black canvas or a black fabric ,the color promises limitless possibilities. The reasons to love black will never cease. Unwittingly or by choice it has become my go to color. As Wednesday Addams famously put it, “ I’ll stop wearing black when they invent a darker color”.

Who can argue with that!
